CDM Smith Wetlands Scientist in Raleigh, North Carolina
Perform routine tasks appropriate for a mid-level environmental scientist, including using Microsoft Office software to record and analyze data and produce technical memoranda and reports
Lead or participate as an active member of field teams in performing jurisdictional surveys for wetlands and waterbodies, stream and lake assessments, threatened and endangered species and common wildlife surveys, and water quality and sediment sampling
Conduct environmental (i.e., Section 404) permitting and wetland restoration/mitigation tasks
Prepare NEPA and state equivalent documents and obtain the necessary environmental and other required Local, State, and Federal permits, including wetlands/404 permits and jurisdictional requirements
Understand and stay current with appropriate regulatory requirements and scientific standards
Be cognizant of project budgets and schedules
Assist Marketing staff with preparing proposals, work plans, and cost estimates
CDM Smith Employment Type:
5 - 7 minimum years of experience since B.S. Certification and/or Master's degree in specialty field desired for scientist positions (where one exists). Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer is desired for engineering positions. Registration as a licensed Professional Geologist within the resident state (if available, or by a recognized professional society if not) is desired for geologist positions. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in specify area and a good knowledge of principles/practices in related specialties.
Bachelor’s Degree in Plant/Soil Science, Ecology, or other related environmental science
Demonstrated ability to complete mid-level professional work and shows continued professional development, both in knowledge and abilities
Demonstrated experience in environmental permitting, environmental impact assessments, wetland delineation/mitigation, stream assessment, and wildlife field surveys
Demonstrated experience with Local, State (GA, NC, SC or CA, OR, WA) and Federal wetland regulations and permitting programs
Experience using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment independently or under the supervision of an experienced scientist
Strong written communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality written reports
Willingness to travel, potentially on short notice, to distant field sites within the U.S. Most field trips are one week or less in duration.
Comfortable conducting field assignments in challenging conditions – must be able to handle the physical demands (e.g. lifting 50 pounds) of field assignments in difficult terrain and poor weather conditions
Works well in both field and office environments
Demonstrated successful workplace relationships and experience working with subcontractors and regulatory agencies
